My Approach

“You don’t have to fit the therapy — the therapy fits you.”

At Seema Desai Counselling, I practice what's known as an integrative approach to therapy. But what does that mean for you?

This is your space — and I’ll help guide the process.

Simply put, therapy is not one-size-fits-all. You’re not expected to fit into a rigid model — instead, the process adapts to you. Our work together is centred around your goals, your pace, and what feels most meaningful for you to explore.

I bring a flexible, integrative approach to counselling — which means I draw on several different therapeutic models and techniques to support you as a whole person. While you guide the themes we explore, I provide a grounded structure to support that exploration. Together, we shape a process that’s both personal and purposeful.

What Is Integrative Counselling?

Integrative counselling blends elements from different therapeutic approaches to tailor support to each individual. Instead of following a single method, I use what’s most helpful for you, based on your needs, preferences, and the issues you’re facing. Think of it like having a full toolbox: rather than using the same tool for every problem, I select the ones that fit your situation best.

Why People Choose Integrative Counselling

  • It’s flexible and personalised — your therapy evolves with you
  • It respects your pace — whether you need to slow down or dive deep
  • It supports lasting change — not just symptom relief

  • It combines insight with practical tools — for both understanding and action

Areas of Support

I support people from all walks of life, navigating challenges such as grief, anger, relationship breakdowns, divorce and separation, illnesses, workplace stress, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and the weight of cultural or societal expectations. This can include:

  • Depression - Gentle exploration through the fog of depression, focusing on sustainable steps toward brighter days.
  • Anxiety & Panic - Tools and techniques to understand triggers, manage symptoms, and reduce anxiety's impact on your daily life.
  • Low Self-Esteem & Confidence Issues - Supportive exploration of negative self-perceptions and pathways to build authentic confidence.
  • Trauma - Trauma-informed care that respects your nervous system and helps you process experiences at your own pace.

I have a special interest in supporting those who’ve experienced domestic abuse, including coercive control, offering a gentle, trauma-informed approach that honours your lived experience.

  • Domestic Abuse Recovery - A compassionate space to process experiences, rebuild safety, and rediscover your strength after domestic abuse. I understand how deeply abuse can affect not just individuals, but entire family systems — especially children — and how these effects can extend beyond the home, including into the workplace. I also have extensive experience in the family court process and the many agencies involved.
  • Child-to-Parent Violence / Adolescent Aggression (CAPVA) - Support for clients navigating challenging dynamics, with practical strategies for restoring peace and understanding. I know how painful it can be when a child or teenager acts out or becomes abusive. This behaviour often reflects their own stress, trauma, or difficult family dynamics. CAPVA can feel isolating and full of shame — but you're not alone, and support is available.
  • Separation and divorce - Whether it's the end of a marriage, a long-term partnership, or the breakdown of a co-parenting relationship, the emotional impact can be overwhelming and lonely. Together we can make sense of the feelings and a new future. My approach is shaped by years of lived experience navigating the family court system, as well as advocacy work for systemic change.
  • School Bullying & Peer Conflict – Helping young people and their families process difficult social experiences and build resilience. I am also an accredited trainer for Resilience Triple P, a programme that supports emotional wellbeing and positive relationships for children and families.

Whatever your story, and wherever you’re starting from, I offer a warm, confidential, and non-judgemental space where we can explore what matters to you — at your pace.

Coming out of a toxic relationship left me feeling completely lost and overwhelmed by resentment, anxiety, and grief. I felt stuck, constantly replaying events in my head. Working with Seema was the turning point I desperately needed.

Seema provided a safe, non-judgmental space where I felt completely seen and understood—not just for the pain, but for the complex thoughts behind it.

Crucially, she didn't just validate my feelings; Seema equipped me with specific, actionable strategies to process the resentment and anxiety that was controlling me. Triple P Resilience: What stood out for me was the sense of community Seema was able to convey with our group of parents. It was reassuring to hear direct from our parents who were all facing similar challenges that Seema was incredibly supportive. Seema listened, shared advice, and created a space where our parents felt empowered.

Triple P Resilience: I observed Seema throughout the programme and observed a warm, engaging and nurturing delivery style. I was impressed with how well Seema delivered complex materials and kept the parents and children engaged throughout. We received very positive feedback on the delivery and identified positive outcomes from this first cohort. I was impressed by Seema’s willingness to be the first to deliver this programme outside of Australia and how seamless it was. Seema was very easy to work with, always responsive, solution-focused and professional in manner. I would highly recommend Seema for any parenting facilitation.
